At its core, CFS revolves around the inability to say no—a trait often learned in childhood. Individuals who received messages that it was not acceptable to refuse others' requests, often due to fear of punishment or abandonment, are more prone to developing CFS. This fear leads to a perpetual cycle of hypervigilance, overcommitment, and self-betrayal, as individuals prioritize others' needs over their own.

Heather highlights the concept of "self-rejection programming," where individuals become disconnected from their intuition and desires, constantly adapting to meet the expectations of others. This disconnect can stem from various childhood experiences, such as being placed in a caretaker role or experiencing abuse, leading to a chronic pattern of self-neglect.

Moreover, she discusses how the lack of self-care and self-soothing skills in childhood contributes to ongoing dysregulation of the central nervous system, exacerbating fatigue and hypervigilance. Individuals may attract relationships and environments that perpetuate this cycle of self-sacrifice and fatigue, further reinforcing feelings of powerlessness.

Disconnected from their intuition, those who suffer from CFS may become vulnerable to controlling personalities, perpetuating feelings of powerlessness and fatigue. This fear of failure and lack of confidence in healthy relationships trap individuals in cycles of self-sacrifice and fatigue. However, Heather offers hope, emphasizing that healing is possible with the right tools and support.
